13 year old Chetham’s pianist, Yuanfan Yang won the 19 and under category in the James Mottram Piano competition held at the RNCM this term.
The international panel of eight concert pianists heard performances by people from China, Poland, New York, Eastern Europe, as well as from the other UK Music Schools including Purcell and Wells Cathedral School.
Yuanfan performed Chopin’s Concerto No 1 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and also had to learn 50 minutes of solo repertoire, prior to being selected by DVD audition. Yuanfan won the first prize of £4000 and a concerto appearance with the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
