CHILD prodigy Yuanfan Yang has delighted his parents and teachers by passing another advanced piano exam.

The 10-year-old can now use DipABRSA after his name after obtaining the Piano Performer's Diploma of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Yuanfan was only eight when he achieved a Distinction in his Grade 8 exam, dropping just 20 marks to get 130 out of 150.

His headteacher at Cookridge Primary in Leeds, Stuart Tomlinson, said staff and governors were absolutely delighted at his success.

"This exam is usually taken by 19-to-21-year-olds who are studying for a degree in music," he said. "It is amazing for a 10-year-old to pass it."

Yuanfan is a student at the Yorkshire Young Musicians, which he attends weekly at the Leeds College of Music. Although a talented classical pianist he can also play and improvise jazz and blues and he composes.

He recently played one of his own compositions in Leeds Town Hall at the Chinese New Year celebrations. Titled Flying Snow, it was about heavy snowfalls in Leeds.

His father, Dr Lan Yang, is an expert in Chinese linguistics and literature.
